Due to its successful programming and advocacy, the Sickle Cell Association of Texas Marc Thomas Foundation was honored to receive an exclusive invitation to meet with President Barack Obama in his first 100 days in office, in the Oval Office. The Sickle Cell Association of Texas Marc Thomas Foundation was the only sickle cell community-based organization in the country bestowed with this honor. Our President and CEO Linda Wade and Chief Operating Officer Alysian Thomas were thrilled to enter the Oval Office and converse with the sitting President to discuss sickle cell disease. Being in the presence of President Barack Obama’s compassionate and uplifting spirit, to discuss our passion for sickle cell disease will remain one of our agency’s proudest moments.
The Sickle Cell Association of Texas Marc Thomas Foundation were grateful to have two board members, Alysian Thomas and Dr. Frei-Jones serve on the Texas Sickle Cell Advisory Committee for two years. The two board members, along with other Advisory Committee members helped to provide recommendations across the state of Texas including education, creating a Sickle Cell Task Force and other important measures. The Sickle Cell Association of Texas Marc Thomas Foundation met with former President and former Texas Governor George Bush to advocate with persons suffering from sickle cell disease in Texas.
The Sickle Cell Association of Texas Marc Thomas Foundation has had the honor on numerous occasions to speak in front of the Texas Congress and the Senate about sickle cell disease, sickle cell trait and our programs.
The Sickle Cell Association of Texas Marc Thomas Foundation has received numerous awards and accolades from city and state officials. Some of the awards includes: Marc Thomas Memorial Day by the Texas House, Proclamations from the Governor of Texas, local awards, and numerous other accolades.
The Sickle Cell Association of Texas Marc Thomas Foundation successfully lobbied the state of Texas to implement sickle cell trait testing in all newborns regardless of gender or race.
